Green Care Farms – Farm based environments to support health for vulnerable populations have been proven a beneficial and effective program and housing model. It will help us meet the growing need for disability housing in our community. It can also assist families, community and the environment through our involvement and support of others in the production of local, organic food.
There is an expected 230% increase in the number of individuals with autism transitioning to adulthood in the next eight years.
It is estimated that 500,000 children and young adults with autism will move out of their home in the next 10 years.
Adults with autism often struggle to maintain employment and live independently due to the social, sensory and cognitive demands of working. In fact, it is reported that as many as 80% of adults with autism are unemployed — one of the highest rates of unemployment among adults with disabilities. In Alberta, the unprecedented rate of autism has created a serious housing crisis for affected adults with limited options and growing wait lists.
